Question: I have noticed a bug in the door frames and on some walls in my
home that looks like a water melon seed. Its flat and some what oval
shaped. On close inspection it has something that looks like a feeler
coming out of the top. Do you have any idea what type of bug this could
be?
ANSWER What you have found are probably 'plaster bagworms'. They are quite uncommon.
These insects are cousins to clothes moths and can do the same kind of damage to wool materials. It would be best if you removed the wool clothing and had it dry cleaned and then stored in a sealed container (remember that cedar closets and chests will not protect these materials). Vacuum the site very well to get the caterpillars which are protected from chemical sprays in their bags, and any adults lurking in the area. Periodic checking and vacuuming may be necessary until you don't see any more.
