Question: I've recently noticed (perhaps b/c we've gotten a good bit of
rain lately) a bunch of small, round holes (1/4-1/2") in my yard. I
haven't checked to see how deep they are. There are lots of them, but
they're not near the house - out in an open space. What could this be?
ANSWER If there were trees nearby, I would suspect cicadas or the large wasps (called "cicada killers") that prey on them.
Animals, such as skunks, dig in the ground for grubs. I'm not sure their holes will look like the ones you've described.
