Petco Distribution Center #300 and Orkin:
Picking Up Another Integrated Pest Management Win
On a sunny day in Stockton, Ca., Petco Distribution Center (DC) #300 buzzes with the sound of associates picking pallets and trucks rumbling to the loading dock. The warehouse is spotless, not a kibble in sight, and its employees work as efficiently as the forklifts whirring down the aisles of pet food.
As one of ten regionally based distribution centers for Petco, the leading specialty retailer of premium pet food and supplies, DC #300 boasts impeccable standards and an outstanding Integrated Pest Management (IPM) program that focuses on sanitation and exclusion to keep pests from snacking on products.
Since 2008, Orkin Commercial Services’ Gold Medal™Protection program has helped the facility strengthen its food safety program and maintain pest management excellence. It’s only fitting that DC #300 is a recipient of a 2012 Gold Medal™ IPM Partner Award presented by Orkin, The IPM Institute of North America and NSF International. The facility’s win marks the fourth Gold Medal™ IPM Partner Award for a Petco distribution center in the last four years.
We spoke with Bob Nelson, director of supply chain services and compliance for Petco, about their partnership with Orkin. Here is an edited transcription of that interview:
What makes Petco’s IPM program award winning?
“Over the past several years, Petco has made significant investments to re-engineer operational processes, upgrade facilities, restructure the logistics organization and change our approach to pest management. Petco’s senior leadership set the direction to facilitate a culture that reinforces our commitment to animal health and wellbeing with an integrated approach to improving and sustaining our food safety standards. Working with Orkin has helped us strengthen that culture of excellence.”
Why did you choose Orkin’s Gold Medal™ Protection program?
“As our food safety program requirements evolved, we were looking for a pest management partner that could provide consistent service, program documentation and access to resources and tools that would support our commitment to excellence. We found the Gold Medal™ Protection program offered all of that to us.”
How does each partner contribute to the pest management efforts at the facility?
“Our relationship with Orkin is central to managing our food safety program. The Orkin team spends significant time working with our facility leadership to build a strong partnership at DC #300. In addition to routine service calls, Orkin makes time to address our concerns, communicate with us about pest management issues and support our food safety program however they can.”
What results have you seen from your partnership with Orkin?
“DC #300 has an outstanding audit record and maintains the facility at the highest sanitation and pest management standards, thanks to Orkin. Our partnership has improved the consistency and documentation of Petco’s IPM program, helped us identify and resolve pest management issues quickly, and allowed us to provide valuable training to our entire distribution center staff.”
