Fruit Flies in Bananas

Fruit flies lay their eggs and feed on sugary, sticky, organic material. They are particularly fond of bananas and tend to infest homes with fruit left out on counters and other open surfaces. It was the fruit fly's preference for bananas that prompted the biologist R. Milner to recreate Gregor Mendel's bean experiments using fruit. Due to the fruit fly's rapid reproduction rate, the experiment was carried out in a matter of weeks, rather than the years Mendel devoted to the original study.

Affected sections of fruit can be cut out, although consuming fruit fly larvae may lead to severe intestinal discomfort. Fruit flies may also infest fruit prior to its arrival in the home: in the event that fruit appears affected by fruit fly infestation, it is best to dispose of it and purchase new fruit.
