House Gnat

House gnat is the name many people use for small flying insects they see in their home. There are several flies they could be seeing. The most likely suspects are fruit flies or fungus gnats. The fruit fly seeks organic matter for food and can be found hovering near fruits and vegetables in a kitchen. All fresh produce should be inspected carefully before being brought into the home. Produce from open-air markets could be a concern. Additionally, these flies may enter homes via doors and windows close to vegetable gardens.

Fungus gnats thrive in the damp soil of over-watered houseplants. Female gnats lay up to 300 eggs on the surface of a plant's soil. These eggs hatch after five or six days and remain in the larval stage for 10 to 14 days, feeding on organic matter in the plant's soil. If there are many gnats present and the population is increasing at a more rapid pace, the plant's roots and root system will be in danger. Healthy, large plants are likely to face less damage.

If you identify an infestation, contact your local pest control professionals to determine the most efficient way to eradicate the house gnat from your home.
