Phenotypes of Flies

When identifying the type of fly responsible for an infestation, it is important to note the phenotypes, or physical appearances, of flies. After successfully identifying flies, it will be easier to determine where they feed and lay their eggs. By eliminating these feeding and breeding sites, the fly's life cycle can be disrupted.

In the case of fruit flies, eye color, body type, body shape and body size are significant identifiers. Fruit flies have disproportionately large eyes that are most commonly red. However, some mutations produce white or eyeless flies. Adult fruit flies are black or tan in color. Males and females belonging to many fruit fly species are distinguishable by varying eye shapes.
