For security reasons we had no choice but to place the flag in our secure artifact storage facility, but having it there before it was fumigated made me very nervous. That is why we were so grateful to Orkin for treating it for us so quickly. Once the Chamblee Branch Manager was made aware of the problem, he quickly identified the insects as powder post beetles and arranged for the flag plus some other articles to be placed in the fumigation vault at the Rollins home office. Although the fumigation itself only lasted seconds, the articles had to be left in the vault overnight. Thanks to the timely work, the flag will reach the textile conservator on schedule so it will be ready for display at Ft. McAllister by December 1. We were able to fit a number of smaller rugs into the treatment chamber along with the flag. They have now been tagged and placed in our collection storage until the interior of the house [from which they came] has been restored. Your assistance has made it possible to do this without fear of contaminating other artifacts in storage. Most of these things at the historic preservation site will need additional treatment of some sort, even if it is as simple as very careful vacuuming, but the first step has to be fumigation. Thank you so much for your generous help with this project. It is truly appreciated.
