Mattresses and pillows make perfect habitats for bedbugs. Pillows may also be host to bedbug eggs, making them a focal point of bedbug infestations.
The first sign that bedbugs have infested pillows is the appearance of bites. Although some individuals do not experience any reaction to bedbug bites, many bites develop into red bumps within a few days. These bites, also known as papules or wheals, typically appear in a row.
If you experience what you believe to be a bedbug bite, check your pillow closely. Small spots of blood or dark spots of bedbug feces can be clear indicators of the insects' presence. A sweet, musty scent may emanate from infested pillows, mattresses or sheets, as well.
Laundering your pillow and pillowcase may rid those items of bedbugs. However, bedbugs commonly infest entire living spaces and are not easily exterminated. If you suspect a bedbug infestation, contact your local pest control professional to arrange for an inspection and consultation.
