What Eats Carpet Beetle Larvae

Many animal species consume beetle larvae outside. Certain ant species eat beetle larvae and carpet beetle populations can also be controlled through the introduction of lacewing insects. Gardeners prize lacewings, as they consume beetle larvae as well as white flies, aphids and other pests.

Southern three-banded armadillos prey on carpet beetle larvae, although they prefer to eat termites and ants in summer. Mexican short-tailed snakes eat leafcutter ants as their primary food source and will consume carpet beetle larvae located within leafcutter ant nests.

When threatened, carpet beetle larvae can emit bitter fluids from their glands in order to repel predators. This fluid is extracted by larvae from the leaves of trees. Extreme infestations outside may prove too large for natural predators to control. Inside, carpet beetle larvae cause damage to a variety of materials and their growth can remain unchecked. Should you identify a carpet beetle infestation within or around your home, contact your local pest control professional to discuss treatment options.
