Are Garden Spiders Poisonous?

Approximately 120 species of garden spiders have been identified. These spiders spin ornate web patterns and are also known as orb weavers. The webs of garden spiders are used to trap prey, which is then injected with venom.

Garden spiders may also attack humans when they perceive threat, but the venom of garden spiders is not harmful to human health. For most people, garden spider bites result in swelling and mild discomfort.

In some cases, an individual will experience an allergic reaction to the bite of a garden spider, in which case more serious symptoms may occur. Always seek medical attention in the event of serious symptoms or illness following a spider bite.
