Australian Red Back Tarantula

The redback spider is found primarily in warm, urban areas. They are not tarantulas, but are members of the widow family and are closely related to the brown widow. Australian redback spiders weave funnel-shaped webs in order to live and catch prey. Webs are built in sunlit areas and are found primarily in dry locations. These arachnids prey primarily upon insects but may also catch and consume lizards. After mating, females are known to devour males.

Named for red stripes found along the abdomen, female redback spiders are black and also exhibit orange markings on the underside of their abdomens. Similar in shape and color to the markings of the black widow spider, female redback spiders cause great fear in those who encounter them. Males are brown in color and exhibit white markings.

Females can grow up to 15 millimeters in size, while males rarely exceed four millimeters. Females are one of the most venomous spiders in Australia; the bite of a redback spider is toxic to humans. Seek medical attention at the first sign of symptoms. While these spiders are native to Australia, they have been introduced to other countries by tourism and commerce.
