Bird Eating Tarantula

The Theraphosa blondi may also be known as the goliath bird-eating or birdeater tarantula. These arachnids measure up to 12 inches in size and can weigh more than 120 grams, placing them among the largest tarantulas in the world. Bird-eating tarantulas may appear light or dark brown in color, with golden hues. They are mostly found in swampy and marshy areas.

While goliath birdeater spiders are capable of consuming birds, they rarely eat specimens larger than hatchlings. Goliath birdeater tarantulas also consume full-grown mice. Similar to other spider feeding habits, these tarantulas first immobilize prey through a venomous bite. Prior to consumption, they liquefy their prey through the use of digestive enzymes.

The birdeater tarantula defends itself through the projection of barbed hairs. When threatened, it also emits resonant hissing sounds that are produced by the legs. This process is known as stridulation and is specific to the Theraphosa blondi.
