Because wolf spiders are extremely common in California, they are sometimes referred to as California wolf spiders. Wolf spiders may measure between nine and 35 mm. in body length. Most commonly brown in color, variations include gray and black specimens.
Although they are not known to be particularly aggressive, wolf spiders will bite when provoked or threatened. A bite from a wolf spider may result in swelling, pain and itching. These effects typically subside within a few days. In extreme cases, victims experience an allergic reaction to venom.
California wolf spider bites may also be misdiagnosed. Because these spiders are often confused with the brown recluse, identification of the specimen is necessary to ensure proper treatment of bites. When possible, specimens should be brought to medical professionals at the time of treatment.
