Caribbean Tarantulas
Caribbean tarantulas are spread throughout the Lesser and Greater Antilles and belong to the New World tarantula group. Equipped with blade-like, urticating hairs, New World tarantulas cause itching and discomfort when handled. Male Caribbean tarantulas can be seen in the open, as they often move about in search of potential mates. Females are less mobile and tend to remain within their burrows.
While the bite of a tarantula is not fatal to humans, certain tarantula species are more aggressive than others. A number of Caribbean tarantulas, such as the Psalmopoeus Cambridgei, are known to attack with little provocation. Some individuals experience severe allergic reactions to the venom of the tarantula. In the event of extreme symptoms, medical attention should immediately be sought. Tarantulas also move very quickly and should be approached with care. Although other Caribbean species are known for their docile nature, wild arachnids are untamable and should never be handled.
