Grass Crab Spider
Grass crab spiders are also known as grass dwellers and can be distinguished from other crab spider species by their appearance. While most crab spiders are capable of shifting their appearances to resemble flowers and local flora, grass crab spiders are unique in their ability to resemble grass.
The Oxytate grass crab spider is slimmer and longer than other grass crab spider species and varies in shade from cream to light brown to semi-transparent green. Runcinia grass crab spiders are darker in color and resemble single blades of grass. The spiky grass crab spider is shiny and appears to be covered in grass seed. Some species are striped, allowing them to blend in with the veins in grass.
As with other crab spiders, grass crab spiders wait patiently and ambush unsuspecting prey. When at rest, they pose with their legs forward in order to more fully resemble their surroundings. Grass crab spiders inject their prey with venom prior to feeding. These spiders feed on various insects, including bees and butterflies.
