Hobo Spider Bite

Hobo spiders are also known as aggressive house spiders. Contrary to its moniker, the hobo spider is not always aggressive. Rather, these arachnids usually attack only when provoked or threatened. Hobo spiders are extremely protective of their egg sacs and will bite if they perceive a threat to their young. Oftentimes, humans do not realize that they are encroaching upon a hobo spider. This occurs when a spider is residing in dark areas. Hobo spiders may also live in woodpiles and can bite when people begin to dismantle their dwelling places.

Although the hobo spider bite has been found to be poisonous, it is not deadly to humans. Symptoms do not manifest until 24 to 36 hours following an attack. Blisters form at the site of the bite and tissue necrosis may result. Skin necrosis heals very slowly and can be serious.

Hobo spider bites may also cause allergic reactions, with symptoms similar to migraines with soreness of joints, drowsiness, nausea and hallucinations. Due to similarities in appearance and symptoms, hobo spider bites are oftentimes mistaken for brown recluse spider bites. Individuals experiencing these symptoms should seek medical attention as soon as possible. It is also highly recommended that the offending spider be brought to the doctor for proper identification.
