Hobo Spider Enemies

Although the hobo spider is known as a formidable predator, it is also a food source for other predators. One of the most common hobo spider predators is the European praying mantis. These mantises thrive in the United States because the hobo spider population is so abundant. However, the differing habits of hobo spiders and praying mantises sometimes make predation difficult: the European praying mantis is most active in daylight, while hobo spiders are nocturnal arachnids.

Black and yellow mud-dauber wasps also hunt for hobo spiders. Mud-dauber wasps catch hobo spiders and bring them back to their nests to feed to their young. Although these wasps do not feed exclusively on hobo spiders, the dense populations of hobo spiders present in the northwestern United States and western Canada ensure a steady food supply.

Other spider species act as competitors and enemies to hobo spiders, as well. Hobo spiders may become ensnared in other webs and can be consumed by rival spiders. Spiders that compete with and prey upon hobo spiders include jumping spiders and wolf spiders.
