House Spider Control
The first step in controlling house spider populations is locating infestation sites within a structure. Following location, homeowners may choose to vacuum these areas to remove webs and egg sacs. Outside, webs can be destroyed with the use of the water hose.
In order to truly control house spider populations, it is also necessary to ensure the extermination of all other present pests, which act as food sources for house spiders. As long as food is available, spider infestations will persist. Homeowners should rid their homes of lights that attract insects. Sodium vapor lights are recommended for outdoor use. Otherwise, lights should be located far from the structure. Window and door screens can prevent the entry of other insect pests and the use of door sweeps is suggested. Cracks and other voids within walls and foundations should be sealed with caulking.
Sticky traps and glue boards may also prove effective in capturing individual, adult spiders. Although pesticides are commercially available, poorly administered insecticides can prove harmful to humans and pets. Most chemical treatments should be left to trained pest control professionals.
