House Spider Extermination

Native to Europe and North America, the common house spider belongs to the Family Agelenidae. They are named for the location of their webs, which are often constructed in narrow, funnel forms. These webs are abundant in corners of domestic spaces. They may also be found outdoors under rocks, logs and vegetation.

Although the common house spider is innocuous to humans and does consume other household pests, its webs are unsightly and appear in large numbers. Prevention methods begin with identification of potential dwelling places. These include piles of clutter and boxes. Windows and doors should also be tightly fitted. In garages and other vulnerable locations, the use of sealed, plastic bags is advised for storage.

In order to exterminate house spider infestations, sticky traps may be used. However, traps only address adult spiders and have no effect on nearby egg sacs. Chemical treatments are also available. Before using commercially available pesticides, be certain to read and follow all label directions carefully, as incorrect administration of insecticides can prove harmful to humans and pets. Pest control professionals should be contacted in the event of recurring or extreme infestations.
