Kauai Cave Wolf Spider

The Kauai cave wolf spider inhabits the caves of the Koloa in the Poipu region of Hawaii's Kauai Island. These spiders are eyeless and reddish-brown in color. Specimens can measure up to 20 millimeters in length. The Kauai cave wolf spider was placed on the list of endangered animals in 2000.

Because they are eyeless, Kauai cave wolf spiders sense prey through detection of scent. These spiders stalk and hunt their prey and do not weave webs. Entirely harmless to humans, the Kauai cave wolf spider feeds upon amphipods present within its surroundings. These amphipods are also in danger of extinction.

Kauai cave spider females are protective and caring mothers. Egg sacs are carried in the mouths of adult females until they hatch. Newborns then remain with their mother, residing upon her back, until they are mature enough to hunt for themselves.
