North Carolina Garden Spider
The spider that is seen most often in North Carolina is the garden spider, or writing spider, which weaves webs in zigzag patterns that resemble writing. Writing spiders may exhibit distinct black and yellow markings along their bodies and are sometimes also known as golden or yellow garden spiders.
These orb-weaving spiders construct their webs from silk produced by spinnerets. The silk of these spiders has a great relative strength allowing for resilience in the face of strong winds or the capture of large prey.
While North Carolina garden spiders are voracious eaters, they do not actively seek out food. Rather, writing spiders hang upside down from the center of their webs while waiting for prey, which ranges from flies to grasshoppers. The North Carolina garden spider is not poisonous to humans, although its venom is capable of paralyzing prey.
