Orange Baboon Tarantula

Golden starburst tarantula, golden sunburst baboon tarantula and true starburst tarantula are all monikers for the Pterinochilus murinus, or the orange baboon tarantula. However, this species is most commonly known by the acronym OBT.

Orange baboon tarantulas bear a starburst-shaped marking on the carapace. They are vivid orange or pale yellow in coloration, with black markings visible atop the abdomen and head. They are a relatively small tarantula species, measuring between eight and 12 centimeters in size.

The OBT is semi-arboreal and may live under or aboveground. Web-lined tunnels are seen near the dwelling places of terrestrial orange baboon tarantulas. Orange baboon tarantulas are nocturnal in nature.

Due to its aggressive nature, OBT is sometimes considered short for Orange Bitey Thing. Extremely nimble, the OBT is tremendously defensive and is also sometimes called the orange demon spider. However, despite its propensity to bite, the OBT most commonly retreats in the event of danger. They also stridulate in warning prior to an attack.
