Rio Grande Gold Tarantula
The Rio Grande gold tarantula can grow up to five inches in diameter. With light brown or tan bodies, the legs of these arachnids range from yellow to gold in color. Rio Grande gold tarantulas are sexually dimorphic, exhibiting different physical traits in male specimens than in female specimens. Male Rio Grande gold tarantulas are darker and smaller than females, which are more vividly colored.
Rio Grande gold tarantulas are nocturnal. They are most likely to be found in dry, arid regions such as western Texas. Members of the New World group of tarantulas, these arachnids feature urticating hairs, which cause itching and discomfort when touched.
Typically docile, Rio Grande gold tarantulas will bite in self-defense. Their venom rarely proves fatal, but individuals can experience allergic reactions to the venom of any spider. At the first appearance of severe symptoms, medical attention should be sought.
