Scientific Name for Tarantulas

Tarantulas belong to Kingdom Animalia, Phylum Arthropoda, Class Arachnida, Order Araneae and Family Theraphosidae. Five genera and 30 species of tarantulas have been documented in the United States, each with its own scientific name.

In the United States, the most common type of tarantula is the Eurypelma californicum. This species can be found in the desert areas of California, Texas and Arizona. Another common North American species is the Aphonopelma chalcodes, or desert tarantula. Desert tarantulas can grow up to three inches in length and range in color from gray to dark brown. As their common name implies, desert tarantulas are also found in arid habitats.
