Starburst Baboon Tarantula

The Heteroscodra maculata may also be known as the starburst baboon tarantula or ornamental baboon tarantula. Relatively small in comparison to other tarantulas, the starburst baboon tarantula has a maximum leg span of five inches. However, despite having shorter legs than many other tarantulas, this species moves quickly and easily blends in with the bark of palms and other trees. These stout arachnids exhibit black and white coloration and their hind legs are covered in long hairs, creating a fluffy appearance. Female specimens may live up to 10 years.

Starburst baboon tarantulas are extremely defensive. Prior to biting, they warn attackers with threatening postures. They will also run or charge at their enemy, often scaring attackers with their speed. Although tarantula bites do not prove fatal to humans, the bite of this arachnid can be very painful.

Starburst baboon tarantulas are formidable predators capable of engaging prey much larger than themselves. Lizards and climbing insects form the majority of their diet. These spiders are found most commonly in humid climates where shrubs or palm variants are present. Adults are arboreal, while spiderlings spend considerable time near the ground.
