Tarantula Description

Tarantulas are the largest known arachnids. On average, they measure between two and four inches in length. However, the Pseudotherathosa apophysis is capable of exceeding 13 inches.

The perceived size of specimens is oftentimes exaggerated due to the tarantula's abundant hair. This hair, which covers the entire body of the tarantula, serves as a defense mechanism against predators. When handled, these, urticating hairs can cause itchiness and discomfort on skin and exoskeletons. Some species are capable of launching these hairs at predators with their back legs.

Most tarantulas are dark black or brown in color, although some species exhibit vibrant blue and red hues. Several species also bear yellow or orange stripes along their legs. Common names are often assigned to tarantulas based on these defining physical characteristics.
