Tarantula Kansas

Tarantulas can be found in the western and southern parts of Kansas. However, due to lack of research and large territory, it is not known how many species are present in this state. Some tarantulas in Kansas reside in rocky habitats, while others reside in hillsides. Most burrow underground. Texas brown tarantulas are definite inhabitants of this area. Researchers also believe that the Texas brown tarantula may be present in the southern third of the state.

Tarantulas are black, light or dark brown in color and may measure up to seven inches in size. Their bodies are covered in dense hair, causing them to appear larger than they are. This hair also serves as a defense mechanism against predators: when touched, urticating hair causes discomfort in skin and eyes.

Tarantulas are known to bite when they perceive threat. Any tarantula should be approached with caution. It is not advised that humans attempt to handle these arachnids. In the event of a tarantula bite, bleeding could occur. The wound should then be cleaned to remove all debris.
