Tropical Jumping Spider
Although jumping spiders can be found in desert, mountain and temperate climates, they reside in the largest numbers in tropical environments. Tropical jumping spider species are often more colorful than those found in other climates.
One of the most renowned species of tropical jumping spiders is the Mopsus mormon, otherwise known as the clown spider or green jumping spider. These arachnids are capable of consuming prey five times their own size. As such, the Mopsus mormon preys upon snakes and mice. Their jaws are so large that they are kept folded within the mouth when not in use.
Green jumping spiders measure up to 18 millimeters in length and exhibit sexual dimorphism. The bodies of female green jumping spiders are entirely lime green, while males exhibit only one green marking at the abdomen and are otherwise dark brown in color. A white tuft is also present on the head of the male. The face of the female is dappled brown and white.
Tropical environments also host the Portia fimbriata, a tropical jumping spider covered in tufts of hair that resemble lichen. These arachnids measure approximately one centimeter in size and exhibit peculiar spotting patterns. The Portia fimbriata is often mistaken for decaying, organic matter, which discourages predators. It consumes various insects, as well as other spiders and spider eggs.
