Brown Dog Tick Diseases
Because brown dog ticks can breed indoors, they are common in all parts of the world and are major carriers of disease. They are most often associated with canine ehrlichiosis, canine piroplasmosis, and canine babesia, all diseases that affect dogs.
In dogs, ehrlichiosis causes fever and lethargy. Canine bebesiosis results in fever and lack of appetite. These diseases often occur in warm, humid locations. The brown dog tick also transmits Rocky Mountain spotted fever. However, these ticks are not known to carry or transmit Lyme disease.
In order to reduce or control indoor brown dog tick infestations, the affected home must be thoroughly cleaned. Special shampoos and medications may also be used on the affected dog's fur. Contact your veterinarian to discuss any such treatments. Although pesticides are commercially available, they can be harmful to humans and house pets if they are misapplied. Severe infestations often require the services of pest control professionals.
