Black Mice
Mice range in color from white to light brown, dark brown, silver, gray or black. Some mice exhibit dual coloration. White and brown is the most common of these combinations, while some specimens may have white, brown and black coats. Colorful mice are typically hamsters and gerbils. However, there is no distinct species known as black mice.
Recent studies show that black coloration is dominant in mutations. For these studies, male and female mice were paired in cages in combinations of white and white, white and black and black and black. Results revealed that two white mice always bear white offspring. Two black mice, however, yield a mix. One white mouse and one black mouse will result in predominantly black offspring. Black mice have a recessive white gene, leading a black coat to be dominant over a white one.
