Rainforest rodents are both terrestrial and arboreal in nature. They are responsible for the germination of seeds and healthy rainforest ecology. Also commonly known as agouti, these rodents live within hollow tree trunks or within networks of large roots.
Agouti rodents are capable of opening Brazil nuts with their exceptionally sharp teeth. With life spans of twenty years, they are some of the most long-lived rodents. They may be nocturnal or diurnal in nature.
Coendou are common rainforest rodents. These prehensile-tailed porcupines are nocturnal and arboreal. Unlike their terrestrial cousins, coendou cannot throw their quills in defense or attack. Their quills also are not especially sharp. Coendou feed primarily on fruits, buds, bark and flowers. They tend to outlive porcupines and may survive for up 17 years.
