Rodents are some of the most adaptable creatures on the planet and are extremely difficult to exterminate. They are destructive pests and are carriers of disease in both metropolitan and rural areas.
Basic, homemade rodent control methods include box traps, baits and the elimination of identified points of entry. Box traps are generally propped up and fall on rodents when their bases are disturbed. However, larger specimens may be capable of escaping from these makeshift traps.
Some homemade bait proves extremely effective. Because rodents will feed on most food sources available to them, the use of meat, rice, fruit or peanut butter may prove effective. Be advised that some rodents are capable of accessing these baits without triggering traps.
After identifying the nesting and entry points of rodents, sprinkle talcum powder outside of the hole. When footprints are visible leading away from the hole, use a common steel wool dish cleaner to prevent reentry. Spackle or concrete may be used to cover these unsightly holes.
Although these homemade methods may prove effective to some extent, they are not capable of addressing full-blown rodent infestations. It is recommended that anyone experiencing a rodent infestation contact a pest control professional to arrange for a consultation. Professionals are trained not only to address current infestations but also to prevent future infestations.
