A variety of rodent traps are commercially available. From live traps to glue and classic snap traps, these contraptions vary in effectiveness.
Live traps are designed to catch rodents without causing them physical harm. Following capture, homeowners must release these rodents into the wild. If not emptied in a timely manner, live traps may cause rodents to die of starvation. Rodents may also return to their nests after being released.
Kill traps, also commonly referred to as death traps, do precisely what their name implies. They eliminate individual rodents, which require careful and timely disposal. Glue traps are popular kills traps that work through detaining a rodent until starvation occurs. However, some rodents are capable of escaping from glue traps. Caught rodents may also emit discomfiting noise prior to death. Snap traps and rat zappers immediately kill captured rodents.
Regardless of type, traps alone cannot control rodent populations. Mice and rats proliferate at rapid rates and will not leave an infested area of their own accord. Professional pest control is often necessary in conjunction with other control and repellent methods.
