Roof Rat Bait

Non-toxic baits are intended to attract rats to a trap. Rats are shy and avoid new things. They will avoid traps unless there is something very attractive on the trap. Roof rats may be attracted to simple food scraps. Pieces of fruit and bacon are particularly effective in drawing roof rats toward traps. In addition, try putting the attractant out for a few days before setting the trap. This will get the rat used to eating at that location. In hot environments, soft products like peanut butter may be unsatisfactory as attractants.

Toxic baits are intended to kill the rats when they eat the bait. Chemical baits are available as multiple-feeding or, single-feeding, anticoagulants or non-anticoagulants.  Roof rats try to take food back to their nest so they can eat it safely. When they do this with toxic bait, they often scatter it and it can become accessible to children or pets. It is also common for a few rats to hoard most of the toxic bait so that most of the rats survive the baiting program. It is advisable that anyone considering the use of these toxic baits first consult a pest control professional.
