Types of Mice

The house mouse, field mouse, African tree mouse and the European harvest mouse belong to the Family Muridae. The Family Cricetidae includes the field mice of South America, American harvest mice, deer mice, carnivorous grasshopper mice, voles, rice rats, hamsters, lemmings, muskrats and gerbils. The pocket mouse and kangaroo rat belong to the suborder Sciuromorpha, meaning squirrel-like rodents.

The house mouse is the best known of mice species. Found throughout the world, house mice prefer to dwell in concert with humans. These rodents are gray or brown in color and bear large, rounded ears. Their muzzles are pointed and their tails scaly. House mice are omnivorous feeders and can be carriers of human diseases.

The term field mouse applies to various mice species in the wild. Belonging to the Genus Apodemus, field mice are directly related to house mice. Long-tailed field mice are nocturnal burrowers. These rodents prefer to feed on plants and may be present in domestic gardens. The North American field mouse is also known as the vole. Field mice belonging to the Genus Akodon may dwell within human homes.
