Originally, boric acid was the insecticide of choice for homes suffering termite infestations. This natural white powder was mixed with water to combat various types of insect infestation and was sometimes successful. However, the field of pest control continues to advance new technologies better-suited to dealing with infestations.

Professional exterminators typically employ multiple techniques in order to achieve the fastest and most effective results. When combating subterranean termites, professionals utilize bait stations containing slow-acting insecticides which gradually poison and sterilize entire colonies. In addition, exterminators will spray active trouble areas with fast-acting pesticides that kill affected insects. These sprays are primarily to protect homes from termite infestations. In extreme cases some exterminators also uproot underground nests that may be feeding into homes. 

This multi-pronged approach to termite extermination has proven to be much more effective than do-it-yourself treatments. Because termite infestations are rarely noticed before they reach problematic proportions, it is advisable to involve a pest control professional in any extermination procedure.
