Columbia Pest Pressure

As one of the most successful planned communities in the United States, Columbia, MD, is the ideal home for thriving and diverse populations of residents and pests. Ants can squeeze into local homes through the tiniest foundation cracks and small openings to infiltrate kitchens and other parts of the structure. Most are attracted to sugar and due their small size, easily contaminate a variety of food containers and become a nuisance. Common types of nuisance ants in area homes include carpenter, pharaoh, pavement, acrobat, field, and odorous house ants.

Spiders can be problematic for Columbia residents, as several kinds of spiders, including black widows, are found in Maryland. The black widow’s bite may cause serious symptoms within hours, including chest and abdominal pain, muscle cramps, difficulty breathing, and nausea. Although more annoying than harmful, brown marmorated stink bugs are another local nuisance. They begin coming inside homes in the fall, searching for warm places to spend the winter. These pests quickly become familiar and unwanted sights crawling along walls and around light fixtures and emit a “stinky” odor when crushed.
