Not everyone bitten by a brown recluse spider will exhibit the same symptoms. The degree of severity depends on the quantity of venom injected by the spider, as well as the age and general health of the victim. Children, the elderly and those in poor health are particularly prone to severe reactions.
Bites may sting or they may go unnoticed for a number of hours. After reddening and swelling, a blister may appear at the bite site. Within hours, this wound may exhibit a telltale bull's eye pattern of concentric, blue, white and red circles. Victims of brown recluse spider bites can experience fever, convulsions, itching, nausea and muscle pain.
On a localized level, brown recluse spider bites often result in necrosis, or the death of living cells. In this case, painful, open wounds appear and do not heal quickly. Wounds will appear purple and black at this time. If left untreated, necrotic and ulcerous wounds can expand to affect both superficial and deep tissues. Deep scarring can occur in the wake of such brown recluse spider bite symptoms and skin grafting is sometimes utilized to cosmetically treat scarring.
If any of these symptoms appear, medical treatment should immediately be sought. Although a number of other medical conditions and insect bites cause similar side effects and are misdiagnosed as brown recluse spider bites, it is nonetheless necessary to treat these symptoms in a timely manner.
