Classic snap traps are commonly used to kill mice within homes. However, they cause unsightly messes and may maim caught rodents instead of killing them. Homeowners must then kill the mice themselves prior to disposal. For best results, these traps should be set flush to walls, with the trigger plates facing the wall.
Glue boards may be effective, as well. These traps do not kill mice on contact. Rather, caught rodents starve or die from stress. Some mice are capable of escaping from glue traps and other specimens will chew their own limbs off in order to release themselves.
Zapper traps lure mice into enclosures before delivering a lethal electric shock. Preferred over the messier glue and classic snap traps, zappers are more costly and require the use of batteries. No traps are capable of exterminating entire rodent populations, as mice reproduce more quickly than traps can capture or kill them.
Although poison proves more effective than traps, it is not recommended for use within homes. Rodent poisons are poisonous to humans and house pets and may be unknowingly ingested by small children. Affected rodents also tend to retreat after consuming poison. Dead specimens are inaccessible and it is difficult to address the resulting odors. Serious infestations require the professional services of pest control experts.
