With venom said to be 15 times more toxic than the venom of the prairie rattlesnake, the female adult black widow spider is recorded as the most poisonous and deadly spider in North America. Black widow spider maps can assist in identifying likely habitats of black widows. In North America, black widows are most common in the American South. However, specimens have been found as far north as Canada.
Worldwide, widow species can be found throughout Russia, Europe, South Africa, the Middle East, Australia, and New Zealand. Black widows dwell in urban, temperate forest and woodland environments. They may also be found in grassland areas.
