Southern American Black Widow Spiders
The weather in the American South is extremely conducive to the development of black widow spiders. Southern black widow spiders are the most common black widow species in the United States. Females spin irregular and non-symmetrical webs. Inside, they hide in dark areas such as closets, garages or basements.
Like the northern black widow, the southern black widow spider is jet-black in color and is shiny. However, the southern black widow spider exhibits more striking markings than other black widow species. The red hourglass-shaped mark on the underside of the southern black widow's abdomen serves to identify it to everyone who sees it.
