Does Bleach Get Rid of Flies in the Drains?

Issues with Drain Fly Control

Getting rid of drain flies can be difficult. These pests lay their eggs in the organic film that lines drain pipes. Larvae feed on the material around them and later emerge from drains as adults.

Since this activity occurs out of sight, homeowners often don't notice a problem until fully grown drain flies appear in kitchens and bathrooms.

Does Bleach Kill Drain Flies?

Many people associate the control of drain flies and bleach. The idea that pouring bleach down the drain gets rid of drain flies is actually a common misconception since doing so rarely helps get rid of these insects.

While this chemical might get rid of some larvae, bleach passes quickly down the drain and does not penetrate the thick build-up where eggs are deposited by the female drain fly and larvae live.

As a result, in most cases, bleach does not get rid of drain flies. Also, this liquid might not be suitable for older pipes. Bleach is corrosive at full strength.

What About Bleach and Ammonia?

Some homeowners have tried bleach followed by ammonia for drain fly control. This mixture is extremely dangerous. Combining these chemicals may create chlorine gas, which is potentially fatal if inhaled. Likewise, other pesticides and home remedies can pollute waterways or harm wildlife.

Safe and Effective Drain Fly Treatment

The most modern way to get rid of drain flies is to remove the film inside pipes with enzyme cleaners. Foaming enzymes applied by pest control professionals break down the film coating that drain flies are eating and may also target drain fly eggs; thus helping to prevent future breeding. This treatment is not dangerous and does not harm plumbing.

Another tactic is to remove and clean the pipes on a sink, shower drain, or utility station. This remedy is more involved and may require expert assistance. Trained Orkin Pros can determine the best drain fly treatment for each situation.
