How can I make sure fleas stay behind when I move?

Question: I rented a room a few months ago and found out they have a very small flea problem. I've only seen four baby fleas in my room during the last month, but I have to move now and my new roommate has pets. I really don't want to bring these fleas with me. My current roommates probably wouldn't want me treating the house since I'd have to remove all of their pets. Is there any way I can treat just my room and all of my packed and ready-to-go boxes before I move?

Answer: There are no "baby fleas," immature fleas are small larvae (like fly maggots) that live in carpets. Fleas are rarely off the host animal, so I am not certain what you saw, but they probably were not fleas. You can pack up your things and move to the new place and not worry, fleas do not leave the host animal and the larvae would not be in anything you are packing and taking with you.
