I have a raccoon problem

Question: I have a raccoon problem. This thing has put four holes in the roof of my house and now is living in my attic. Please tell me what I can do to get him out of my life.

Answer: The raccoon (Procyon lotor) is native only to the Americas, and is one of the most successful animals in the urban and suburban habitat. It has adapted well to utilizing human garbage for food and the sites around houses and outbuildings for shelter. The adults are active almost throughout the year. Males travel a wide area, but females generally remain close to their dens. The young (about five per year) are born in April-May.

These animals are difficult to control. The first step is to understand that raccoons learn quickly, and if they encounter garbage or other sources of food around houses, they will return to those sites often. Keep garbage in sealed containers, close off any sites under porches or sheds that may provide a nest site.

Outdoor lights at night usually do not deter them, but may help somewhat.

Call your local Orkin branch office.

There will usually be a license requirement and perhaps some local trapping restrictions. Your local Orkin branch may be able to trap wildlife or direct you to an appropriate and licensed wildlife trapper.
