Answer: These strange-looking insects tunnel in the soil with their large front legs and feed on the tender roots of grass and other plants. They are harmless, but can fly (hard to believe) and they can make noise like their cousins.

These insects are active in mid to late summer. They are often a pest in lawns and golf courses where they find soft soil and abundant grass roots to feed on. Mole crickets come to lights at night and may be found around them on warm summer nights. They are also common along the shores of small ponds and lakes-again where the soil is soft and there are plant roots to feed on.
