Why are termites attracted to lines of ink?

Question: Why would termites follow the line of a pen?

Answer: The ink in ball point pens (although few are made that will do this) contains a glycohol compound that is an attractant to termites or mimics some of their own trail chemical; diethylene glycol monoethylether is an effective attractant (and found in some pens).
