What made these small, round holes in my yard?

Question: I’ve recently noticed (perhaps b/c we’ve gotten a good bit of rain lately) a bunch of small, round holes (1/4-1/2″) in my yard. I haven’t checked to see how deep they are. There are lots of them, but they’re not near the house – out in an open space. What could this be?

Answer: If there were trees nearby, I would suspect cicadas or the large wasps (called “cicada killers”) that prey on them.

Animals, such as skunks, dig in the ground for grubs. Other ground-nesting wasps, such as yellow jackets also make small hole in the ground.

Adding to this, moles and voles also can make holes. Without an inspection of the holes it can be multiple possibilities.
