These microscopic, threadlike animals have been used as pest control for years: they are added to water and then poured into the openings of the nests. As the water washes onto the termites they become infected with nematodes.
Challenges of Control
The use of nematodes and less palatable woods are not a effective solution to a termite infestation. Due to their sheer numbers and determination, termite infestations will not be sufficiently controlled by these tools. As the wood ages it becomes more palatable and moisture damage can further expedite the process. The nematodes will kill termites, but it often is difficult to get enough of the treatment to the entire colony.
