Spangler Candy Company and Orkin: Sweet Success

Since 1906, Spangler Candy Company has manufactured and marketed some of the most notable candy products around, including Dum Dum Pops®, Saf-T-Pops® and Spangler ®Candy Canes. Headquartered in Bryan, Ohio in a state-of-the-art manufacturing facility covering 500,000 square feet, Spangler must be diligent about food safety and the quality of their products. The company turned to Orkin in 2006 to help protect their facility and have been extremely pleased with the switch to Orkin’s Gold Medal Protection. To learn more about the partnership, we spoke with Pat Hurley Director –Technical Services of Spangler. Here is an edited transcription of that interview.

Why did you choose Orkin?

“We had some problems during an audit, and around that same time, I had been receiving calls from Orkin. After our audit, I told them to come on by. They put together a solid program for us, and we decided to switch providers. We’ve been very happy with the decision.”

What results have you seen from the switch?

“We’ve definitely seen an improvement on our audits, both internal and external. Orkin has been extremely conscientious and great in communicating with us on what we can do on our end to improve. My Pest Specialist provides me a full report at the end of his service. If there are things around our facility we need to fix, he will give me a list of items to follow up on. When that happens, I get our maintenance team on any issues right away. I don’t like seeing anything on our list!”

What are the main pest control concerns at your facility?

“Well, as a candy company, probably ants. Ants love sugar, as everyone knows, so we’re always on the lookout for any issues. If ants do get in from a crack in the wall that develops, Orkin’s on top of it right away.”

What is the best aspect of your partnership with Orkin?

“The thoroughness that Orkin goes through in their service is unparalleled. I’ve been working around the pest control industry for almost 30 years, and I know what we need. Orkin provides all that, and more. Not only does my Pest Specialist do a great job, but the Operations Manager also calls me regularly to make sure everything’s going okay. I call him, too, if we have anything special coming up that he needs to know about.
